iPhone 5 Wedge Form Factor And 3.7″ Display Rumors Ramp Up, But There's This Imminent White iPhone 4 Release…..

Read Charles Moore's new column on the new possible shape of the iPhone 5 and the imminent release of a white iPhone 4s.

Hope everyone had a great Easter weekend. We're back in the harness, with new rumors afoot about the iPhone 5's revised form factor. Will it be made of carbon fiber? (extremely doubtful this time around), aluminum? (considerably more probable), or stick with the current glass back? (I'm guessing likely not).

thisismynext.com's Joshua Topolsky says that while current Internet chatter is suggesting the iPhone 5 will be little more than a speed bump (ie: A5 chip) and feature enhancement in the iPhone 4 form factor what he's been hearing from a variety of unnamed sources is that the iPhone 5 will have a more iPod touch or mini iPad 2 look, with a larger display screen of perhaps 3.7," retaining the present resolution, and occupying most of the device's front face with only a slim marginal bezel, but with a larger Home button also supporting gestures.

Why not an even four-inch screen? The reasoning is that with 3.7″ diagonal and the current resolution, pixel density – the key to Apple's Retina Display bragging rights, would drop from 326 ppi only down to 312 ppi — still comfortably above the somewhat arbitrary Retina Display technology threshold of 300 ppi. However, with a four-inch screen, pixel density with the same resolution would go down to 288 ppi.

Even with a 3.7″ screen, rendering would be somewhat less sharp than it is with the iPhone 4′s display. A good analogy is the G3 iBook and Pismo PowerBook laptops I was running back to back several years ago. Both machines had 1064 x 768 resolution displays, but the Pismo's was 14.1″ while the iBook display was 12.1″ in physical dimension, which made its rendering significantly sharper and crisper than with the larger PowerBook's screen.

Other rumors include an iPhone5 with a larger display and a wedge or teardrop shape thinner than the iPhone 4 and reminiscent of the generation 2 MacBook Air.

However, here's the thing once again; a redesign that radical for release this coming summer or even fall would not set well with a whole lot of folks who've just bought Verizon CDMA iPhone 4s and white iPhone 4s (expected to start selling by the end of the week — possibly as early as Wednesday April 27), who are going to be unhappy campers. A degree of this dynamic is inevitable with the release of any new product upgrade. Think of the folks who had just bought MacBook Airs last September. It happened to me when I bought an aluminum unibody MacBook three months before Apple morphed that model into the 13″ MacBook Pro with FireWire and SD Card support. However, in this instance, a radical iPhone 5 revamp release sometime in the June – September time window would be really hot on the heels of the white iPhone 4 release.

Not that I'm certain Apple won't do it anyway, but why would they go to the considerable trouble of ramping up white iPhone 4 production and channel distribution only to replace it with a new model in just a couple or three months' time? Doing so just to wring a few more sales out of a lame duck iPhone 4 seems pretty cynical, and Apple is usually a classier act than that. Which is another reason why I think an iPhone "4S" upgrade with an A5 processor and perhaps an 8 megapixel camera seems more likely in the near term, with the iPhone 5 release held off until late fall or even 2012.

On Monday, Chris Chang of the Chinese Apple-oriented site M.I.C. Gadget posted an image of a white iPhone with a larger display than depictions of the white iPhone 4 have shown, which he says my be someone's mockup…. or…."prototype iPhone with an A5 processor that game developers are using to prepare their iPhone 5 apps." Interesting, but nothing conclusive there. Still mostly rumors and conjecture, but the white iPhone 4 at least should be reality by the end of the week.

iPhone 5 to come in ‘standard’ and ‘pro’ flavours?

Apple could be set to offer a double whammy of smartphone goodness this year, with news that the Cupertino massive is to launch two versions of the iPhone5.
The iPhone Download Blog is reporting that the new iPhone will come in two variations: standard and pro.
Now the iPhone Download Blog isn’t the first to send rumour and speculation skipping off hand in hand in Apple land, but it seems that this specific piece of information came from an insider who believes that Apple is stocking up on phone components of differing quality.
The components being ordered won’t fit into one iPhone so it is thought that consumers may be able to buy either a budget iPhone or one which has better components inside.
Alternatively, the differing components could be used in the new iPod touch that Apple is rumoured to be working on – which fits better than a complete strategy change from Jobs’ lot.
It is still thought that the iPhone launch will miss its annual June release in favour of a release sometime in September – a date usually kept for the launch of new iPods.

iPhone 5′s Future iOS Being Tested At Apple

iPhone 5 news has been quite dry for the past couple days. The biggest iPhone 5 related news from the past couple days was the fact that people on Twitter were joking around that Obama was going to announce the iPhone 5 and not Osama Bin Laden’s death.
However, here is the closest thing to iPhone 5 news that we could find that will hopefully satisfy you all until some real good news comes out; which is inevitable as September (or even June 2011 for all we know) approaches.
Apparently Apple is already testing the upcoming operating system upgrade for iPhones; the iOS 5, which will be featured on the iPhone5 when it is released. The fifth generation iOS is being tested internally across all of Apple’s major products, including the iPhone 4, iPods and both iPads. There have also been no reports pointing at Apple having app developers tinkering with the new operating system as we definitely would’ve heard something about it by now; but definitely will when the time comes.
According to the same sources, Apple is also testing iOS 5 on the iPhone 3GS which is also interesting since it dissolves reports that Apple would no longer support internal upgrades for anything older than the iPhone 4.
We’ll definitely be getting MUCH more information about the iOS 5 upgrade (which will definitely shed some light on the what to expect from the iPhone 5) at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference in June where they’ve advertised that they would be highlighting the future of Mac OS and iOS; a possibly hint at the final version of 10.7, Lion and iOS 5.
This all furthers the case that Apple will not be releasing the iPhone 5 until Fall 2011, since it would be far too late to be testing the operating system for an iPhone 5 that would released in about a month (on time with previous iPhone releases).
Now lets hope that some more interesting news pertaining to the iPhone 5 picks up in the coming days or else we’ll have to resort to making garbage rumours and news up like some other iPhone 5 websites ( you know who they are).

A5 iPhone 5 prototype released in earnest, but you can’t have one (yet)

A5 iPhone 5 prototype released in earnest, but you can't have one (yet)

Here's a bizarre move which will only up the ante when it comes to the up-in-the-air release date of the iPhone 5: Apple is already circulating an A5-equipped iPhone 5 prototype in an iPhone 4 body to trusted app developers for the sake of ensuring said apps are able to take full advantage of the more powerful A5 architecture by the time the iPhone 5 launches. It all makes one wonder just how near or far away the iPhone 5 really is, and whether the developer model being circulated is merely retaining the iPhone 4 body type in order to keep the appearance of the iPhone 5 a secret, or whether the iPhone 5 will in fact look just like the iPhone 4 from the outside after all. Either way, one thing's for sure: you can't have one. Yet.

The kicker, of course, is that Apple is being awfully trusting of third parties, considering that last year an iPhone 4 prototype ended up being sold to the highest bidder and paraded around on the internet as a trophy. Apple's hopes of keeping the original iPhone 4 design a secret were dashed, houses were raided, and the expectation was that the already secretive and paranoid Apple would become even more so after the incident, heading into the iPhone 5 release. And yet here's Apple distributing a quasi-next generation iPhone before its unveiling. It's assumable that at least one of the prototypes will be lost, stolen, photographed, or otherwise before it's all said and done. And while it may look just like an iPhone 4 from the outside, there have to be details inside which, if torn apart, would reveal more information than Apple wants – or maybe not.

In fact the term "iPhone 5″ is something that we outsiders have made up to describe what we suspect Apple's fifth generation iPhone will be, without any knowledge of what the product will be or even whether it will carry that name. The fifth generation iPhone could be a complete external overhaul from the iPhone 4, or it could in fact be the developer prototype being circulated. Either way the move raises more questions than it answers. All it tells us for sure is that the next iPhone will have an A5 processor in it. But then again, on the heels of the A5 iPad 2, that was one of the few iPhone 5 details which was already assumable. Here's more on the iPhone 5.

White iPhone 4 Running Mystery Version of iOS Spotted in the Wild

White iPhone 4 Running Mystery Version of iOS Spotted in the Wild

Here's some double news for you. Vietnamese site Tinhte, who has a pretty good track record of verified Apple leaks, is back at it. This time, they are demoing on video what they claim to be a test version of the white iPhone 4 running a mystery iOS.

While it's hard to tell whether this iOS version is legit or not, I can't imagine it being a jailbreak tweak. I think if it was, we would have figured it out by now…Perhaps the most interesting part of this iOS is the way it handles multitasking. As you can see on the video below, instead of showing the app switcher, it shows you a minimized view of each app opened, a la MultiFl0w. Just like MultiFl0w, you can tap on one of the windows to go to this app, or you can delete it by tapping and holding, then tap the " X ."

On the second video, you can see how folders are implemented. While they look very similar to the current folder implementation, you can tell there is a slight difference. Additionally, there are some interesting settings end users have never seen before – namely Carrier and Internal settings.

So, is this real or is this fake? Well, it seems to be 100% real and what these videos show appears to be a test iPhone 4 running an internal build of iOS 4, as shown in the image below, extracted from the video at about 1.35 min (thanks @H4R4SM for the tip) – iOS 4 Build 8A216.

Well folks, it seems that these videos shed light on what we'll most likely see in iOS 5. Excited or what?

Apple executives defend crowdsourced data collection in building new iPhone features

Apple executives defend crowdsourced data collection in building new iPhone features

In an interview focusing on the issue of access to users' location data, Apple executives defended the concept of collecting anonymous data to provide valuable new services in the future.

The company's official question and answer response to location services issues noted that Apple was collecting anonymous user location data to build an improved traffic database that would power a new service related to maps "in the next couple years."In an interview conducted by Ina Fried of the Wall Street Journal, Apple's chief executive Steve Jobs was asked whether he thought that companies like Apple "need to let people know specifically what you guys are doing with the information and choose whether to participate in these commercial projects, or do you think Apple and others should have fairly broad use of anonymized data."

Jobs responded, "If people don't want to participate in things, they will be able to turn location services off. Once we get a bug that we found fixed, their phone will not be collecting or contributing any crowdsourced information. But nor will it be calculating location."

However, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller then questioned the legitimacy of the question itself, nothing that "sometimes it helps people to understand an analogy that describes what these things are like because they are so new.

"I would think an analogy of a crowdsourced database is every time you walk into a retail store, many retailers have a clicker that counts how many people come in and out of the store. Nobody really cares about that because it is completely anonymous. It is not personal data. It is not anything to worry about. It's not something that people feel is private because it is really not about them. It's a coagulated total of all traffic.

"These crowdsourced databases are sort of like that. Things like that aren't so scary when you think about them in everyday terms," Schiller said.

Big Brother bears gifts

That's an apt analogy, because Apple already conducts anonymized data mining of foot traffic in its retail stores as part of an effort to improve how products are presented and how features such as Genius Bars and store cash registers are located. Nearly every retailer does the same thing.

On the web, Google and other companies regularly introduce products that have benignly ulterior purposes. For example, Google operated a Goog411 service that provided free, automated answers to callers' questions over the phone. Those calls were actually used to record realistic speaking voices in natural settings, data Google used to enhance its voice recognition algorithms.

Similarly, Google's reCaptcha project (originating in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University) is used to provide a free security service for web publishers that challenges users to type the correct captcha as it appears to prove they are a real person. However, the words displayed by the system are taken from Google Books and the Internet Archive sources to double check the automated OCR work in correctly identifying scanned text.

Traffic will be the only new leak today, thanks

Apple's efforts to collect anonymous information from millions of devices to improve the accuracy of location lookups or to power new services (like traffic) are the same thing, its executives maintain.

When asked what other uses the company may make of collectively culled data, Jobs said only that "we mentioned the traffic service and I think that is all we are going to mention at this point in time before we have something to announce."

Pressed further about other the possibility of crowdsourced data being used for other purposes, Jobs said "we are building a crowdsourced database based on traffic and that is what we are saying."

Even More Evidence Pointing At A Late iPhone 5

Even More Evidence Pointing At A Late iPhone 5

In the last week, many reports have been popping up with clues pointing at a later than usual iPhone 5 release. Historically, iPhone's have been announced during Apple's annual WWDC that occurs every June, but a new report suggests that the iPhone5 will be announced in September 2011.

blank
Ming-Chi Kuo, an analysts with Concord Securities reported earlier today that he checked with manufacturers that are involved in the making of iPhones and has concluded a few things based on what they've had to say.

Ming-Chi Kuo claims that the iPhone 5 will not feature a brand-new design, but will instead feature "slight modifications" from the current iPhone 4. He also goes on to state that the iPhone 5 will feature a faster A5 processor that was included in much acclaimed iPad 2, along with an 8 megapixel camera that we reported on a few weeks ago.

Kuo states that his conversations with the Apple supply chain also suggest that the iPhone 5 will go into production in August with an anticipated September announcement.

He also offers a very accurate estimations that Apple hopes to reach a production of 28-32 million iPhone 5′s this year that, according to him, will be ready on time for a late September/early October release of the iPhone 5.

Strangely enough, Kuo still believes that Apple will unveil the iPhone 5 at their annual Worldwide Developers Conference (where they've unveiled previous iPhones), regardless of his belief that it'll be release 3-4 months after that. We believe that it is quite unlikely that Apple would present the iPhone 5 that early as it would definitely lose a lot of the buzz it would be generating at the time of its announcement.

Also, in what is sure to be one of the first semi-legitimate predictions about the iPhone 6 (yes, you read that correctly), Kuo claims that the sixth-generation iPhone will be completely revamped in every way and will be release earlier than usual.

That means that there might be two generations of iPhones released within a year, which would not be too smart of a decision on Apple's part should the speculation be true but might be necessary to compete with upcoming Android phones.

He does make some bold claims, but many of them seem to be very plausible given current speculations on the iPhone 5′s release date. In the past, he's made some accurate predication about the white iPhone 4′s release date and the iPad 2′s screen size, which definitely adds some credibility to what he says.
