iPhone 5 Will Be Thinner and Smaller Says Orange CEO

iPhone 5 Will Be Thinner and Smaller Says Orange CEO

Ah the continuing speculation over what the next generation iPhone will look like carries on today, this time in regards to the earlier rumour of Apple working on a smaller SIM card for their Apple gear and apparently whilst chatting in an interview the CEO of France Telecom/Orange made mention of the iPhone 5 being smaller and thinner.

According to an article over on 9to5 Mac, Stephane Richard, CEO of Orange in an interview with AllthingsD, apparently stated that the next generation iPhone would be smaller and thinner, although the CEO didn't say the iPhone5, he actually referred to the device as the next iPhone.

But as the "next iPhone" is presumed to be the iPhone 5g or iPhone 4S that's being bandied about one can assume he was referring to the iPhone 5 apple, but he didn't say how much smaller and thinner the iOS smartphone would be.

Although this latest rumour does give credence to the possibility of a smaller SIM card, a rumour that came about because Apple wants to make future iPhones thinner and needs the space. Having said that, the only people who really know what Apple is up to is Apple so as usual this should be taken with a pinch of salt.

So what do our readers think, would you like the iPhone 5 to be smaller and thinner, or do you feel Apple shouldn't make the iPhone smaller when others are making their handsets larger?

iPhone 5 Confirmed GSM / CDMA World Phone by Verizon CFO

iPhone 5 Confirmed GSM / CDMA World Phone by Verizon CFO

We say confirmed but really it should be revealed that the new Apple iPhone 5 would be a world phone aka global phone according to Verizon CFO (Chief Financial Officer) named Fran Shammo.

According to PCmag there was an interview with Reuters and the Verizon CFO revealed that the next Apple smartphone iPhone 5 also known as the iPhone 4S would be a world phone aka global iPhone, another words it will be both CDMA and GSM.

This mean that AT&T and many other network companies will have this world phone model, this will give all customers the chance to make calls on both CDMA and GSM. PCmag does report that the AT&T version might have both even though it would only need GSM to be considered a global phone.

The Verizon iPhone 4 is only CDMA, which means it will only work on CDMA networks and not GSM networks such as Africa, parts of Asia and most of Europe. The AT&T iPhone 4 only works on GSM networks, so if the iPhone5 is release on both GSM and CDMA this gives customers more of an option.

Apparently the iPhone 5g will be released on both AT&T and Verizon at the same time, specs on the next-generation iPhone are not known yet but it will be released in September 2011. Can Apple really develop a new iPhone to run on both networks giving customers a world phone?

iPhone 5 Not Necessarily Delayed Because Of Deadly Fire At Apple Components Supplier Factory

iPhone 5 Not Necessarily Delayed Because Of Deadly Fire At Apple Components Supplier Factory

You may have heard in the iPhone 5 news this week about a deadly fire that broke out in one Apple's top Chinese components suppliers' factories, and how the loss of life and inventory would affect both the iPad 2 review and iPhone 5. Blogs like Computerworld reported that the fire in Foxconn's iPad 2 warehouse directly affected iPad 2 assembly, stating by way of collecting reports from across the blogosphere that: "This tragedy will have a great impact on the iPad 2 production line," and that "two people were killed and 16 injured, 3 seriously."

While at first glance this piece would seem to be a prime example of reliable journalism, a closer look at the piece's title reveals how misleading and irresponsible the crux of this report truly is: "iPhone 5 release date delay, iPad 2 freeze: Foxconn factory fire."

Huh? What's this about the iPhone5?

Folks, there is absolutely no solid evidence to support that this explosion will affect the release of the iPhone 5g, or that Foxconn has even begun to manufacture iPhone 5 components. It is yet another way of reconstituting Apple-related news to make an impact on the iPhone 5 hype cycle.

Read the Computerworld article and all of the other corresponding reports: there is no actual reporting about the iPhone 5 being affected as a result of the explosion. All of the news on the Foxconn explosion and fire focuses on the causes of the explosion, the casualties, and its potential impact on the iPad 2.

Ascribing an impact to the iPhone 5 is beyond speculative — its presumptuous.

Just to make sure, I went back into the annals of Google News to find what I could on anything recent that points to active production of components for the iPhone 5. The last story to make its rounds was on March 18th, when a rumor surfaced via 9 to 5 Mac that a Foxconn staffer had leaked photos of prototypes, which results in a slew of new purported iPhone 5 pictures and specs.

Prototypes are one thing — full-on production is another.

Aside from that rumor, there has been little else to suggest that there is any production activity going on at Foxconn. And given the arrest of several Foxconn staffers recently over leaking photos of the iPad 2 a year before its release, it is even doubtful that 9 to 5 Mac's Foxconn source would be brave enough to deliver a true photo of an iPhone prototype.

Is it possible that the recent Foxconn explosion could have affected the iPhone 5 production timetable in some way? Sure, it's a possibility. It's also possible that the tsunami in Japan affected it. Or a mosquito flapping its wings in Rhode Island that led to some improbable chain-reaction that could shift the release of the iPhone 5. But all in all, it is the iPad 2 that is likely to be impacted by the explosion and not some phantom, fabled iPhone — so why do tech news sources present it to us as breaking iPhone5 news?

Oh yes, now I remember: it gets the iPhone community buzzing again.

iPhone 5 Sales forecast

iPhone 5 Sales forecast

There is no avoiding the facts when it comes to how undeniably popular the iPhone models have been and how the iPhone has gradually taken over the smartphone market. In this post we will be looking at exactly how popular the iPhone has been and how we can predict sales for the next generation iPhone 5.

The predictions and graphs showing production levels of the iPhone will also give us a good indication of how soon the iPhone 5 release date really will be.
Take a look at the graph below for instance, we can see that at the end of the last quarter of each year of iPhone production the numbers drastically drop off in preparation for the production of the new model. We can see the production levels of the iPhone 4 are really beginning to drop off and that although we have heard rumours of the iPhone 5 release date being pushed back all signs are pointing towards a iPhone 5 release date over the next few months.

Production/Sales of iPhone models

We can also see from this graphic that the iPhone's sold each year nearly doubles and if this continues after the release of the iPhone5 then the iPhone 5 is set to sell around roughly the same amount as ALL iPhone models previous to it.

The White iPhone Hero

The White iPhone Hero

An interesting and somewhat funny piece of information that iDB reader @EpicGameReviews sent us about the white iPhone 4. If you go to Apple's website, right click on the image of the white iPhone 4 on the homepage, and select "view image" or "image info", you will see how Apple named the image: white_iphone_hero_20110425.jpg.

Does Apple really consider the white iPhone 4 as a hero? I highly doubt it. Does Apple web team have a funny sense of humor? Most likely…

UPDATE: Thanks iDB readers for pointing out how ignorant I am. I had absolutely no idea what a hero shot was until today. But hey, to my defense, I'm French and I'm still learning English everyday. Especially today </embarrassed face>It's always nice to see larger companies joking around a little bit.

Apple iPhone 5 Release Date – Is it Worth Waiting?

Apple iPhone 5 Release Date – Is it Worth Waiting?

Rumours are circulating as to when the iPhone 5 release date will be. Is it worth waiting for the new iPhone which is rumoured to have HD gaming?

Originally we were expecting the iPhone 5 to be released some time in late June, early July. This would have been consistent with Apple's previous iPhone launches. However the recent release of the white iPhone 4 has led to suggestions that we may not see the iPhone, or iPhone 4GS as it also may be know, until September at the earliest. This is certainly a blow for those who were holding out for the iPhone5.

The question is, is it worth the wait? We can only know for sure when the iPhone 5 features are announced. It is looking very positive for us gamers. Our wish for Flash support is not expected to be granted, as Apple continues in their believe that Flash is a security risk. What we can certainly expect is a higher resolution screen, hopefully HD. The camera is also expected to be significantly improved once more, rendering the need for a separate camera for anyone other than a keen photographer needless. Rumours are that it may be as powerful as 8 MP. Yet what excites us the most is the new dual core processors that will introduced. They will allow significantly more CPU hungry games to be developed. This can only increase the quality of iPhone games further. Before we know it standalone consoles will be needless. We will be able to plug our iPhone into the TV and use it as a console. Well maybe we can dream….

What are you hoping for in the iPhone 5 news?

iPhone 5 to be Verizon-AT&T hybrid, maybe LTE, data caps, says insider

iPhone 5 to be Verizon-AT&T hybrid, maybe LTE, data caps, says insider

If those who know don't speak and those who speak don't know, then Verizon's recent mouthing off about the unannounced iPhone 5, which includes the nugget that it'll be a Verizon-AT&T (CDMA-GSM) hybrid device and still yet might or might not sport 4G LTE, must be taken with a grain of salt. On the one hand, if anyone does know iPhone5 details outside of Apple itself, it's one of the phone's primary carrier partners. But on the other hand, the fact that so many companies can't keep their lips shut about Apple's secrets is reason enough to believe that Steve Jobs and company are smart enough not to give partners like Verizon the entire picture up front. Then again, this was Verizon's CEO Fran Shammo himself sharing purported iPhone 5 details to Reuters, and they're the kind of details which he and his company would know about. So here's what Verizon's honcho claims to know about the iPhone 5g.

First he says there will be a single iPhone 5 which works on both Verizon and AT&T. This is no surprise. The existing Verizon iPhone 4 uses a chip which some who've torn it apart believe could have been used as a GSM-CDMA hybrid chip now, if Apple had wanted to go there. So the notion that a single iPhone 5 will talk to both networks sounds plausible enough to be believable.

But whether the iPhone 5′s hybrid antenna system will include 4G LTE is another story. Verizon says that's still up to Apple, which can be interpreted in multiple ways. Either Apple hasn't made up its mind yet and Verizon's comments are merely reflecting that, or Apple is not planning to include 4G LTE but Verizon is still hoping to push Apple into changing its mind before launch. Yes, major companies, even partners, are not above using public comments like this to attempt to subversively push each other into making certain moves; if Verizon can create enough of an expectation that the iPhone 5 4G, then Apple might have to go ahead and make it happen just to avoid public disappointment otherwise.

Finally, Verizon's CEO spoke on something which is in fact his decision: the brief days of new Verizon iPhone customers getting unlimited data plans are over. Those iPhone users who haven't yet switched from AT&T to Verizon aren't going to be able to take their unlimited data with them if they're planning to wait until the iPhone 5 arrives before moving. This alone will keep a good chunk of AT&T iPhone users standing pat for the iPhone 5 and generations to come, as heavy mobile data users look to avoid getting caught in the prospect of either hefty overage fees or having to think twice every time they go to check their email on the iPhone. Here's more on the iPhone 5 news.
